The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Foundation (RAIF) and the Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College, Pollachi, organized an exhibition of robots and other automation technologies at the College grounds on 5th and 7th October, 2015. A total of more than thirty exhibits were presented to an audience of school children and college students, who attended in very large numbers. Their participation was enabled by the large-scale, enthusiastic, and prompt cooperation of all the concerned Government and Education Department officers belonging to the Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Dindigul districts.
Interestingly, the exhibition had a few stalls in which the audience members could hold the controls and operate robots. The creativity and passion of the school and college students who presented their exhibits coupled with the wonder and excitement among the participants contributed to a very fulfilling two days of the event. The stalls featuring automated accident prevention control systems in unmanned railway level crossings, urban automobile noise pollution controls, systems to detect misuse or wrong use of ATMs, robot football, and the display of qua drotor helicopters drew special attention. All the participants returned with considerable fun and inspiration in their hearts and minds.
This initiative of the organizers is perhaps a first in our country, especially considering that the event was held in a non-urban location, in a non-Engineering institution, and participated in by very large numbers of rural school and college students. The organizers plan to host the event annually in order to further their educational and social objectives.
