On 15.7.2016, Freshers’ day was celebrated at Sree Saraswathi Thyagarja College, Pollachi in which all the students who have joined in various UG and PG programs ( except MBA & MCA ) in the Academic year 2016-17 attended the function along with their Parents. The Guest of Honour for the Freshers’ day function was Mr.A.James Stephen, He is the Campus Hiring Head for Tamil nadu region in IT giant WIPRO.
The function was started with the welcome address by the College Secretary Lion.T.Sethupati.
He started his speech with Neil Armstrong’s famous quote “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. He was just referring the kind of transformation that STC has undergone over a period of 18 glorious years. He also stated that STC has a strong commitment to provide quality education at affordable cost to all sections of society.
The Chairman of the college Mr.S.Venkkatesh chaired the Dias. In his Presidential address, he called upon the students to fulfil the expectations of their Parents and do their best for the development of Society and our mother Nation. He also highlighted that STC has maintained its winning streak in terms of Academics and Sports. Since STC is an Autonomous institution, students have a distinct advantage of studying the updated curriculum. Nowadays there is a stiff competition in all fields and urged the students should apply their thought process to establish a well defined career path. Parents, on their part should monitor their wards’ progress. He also stated that only 1/3 of students passing out in Higher Secondary (10+2) go for higher studies which he meant that students who have joined STC are one among the elite group of students pursuing their higher education.
The Chief Guest of the occasion Mr.A.James Stephen pointed out that the I year students are the youngest crowd in the College and they have a sense of excitement and he urged the students to develop a niche for themselves in education. Students should not wait for the perfect time and in fact perfect time comes along with us wherever there is a dedication at work. Referring to the Employment scenario in the country, he pointed out that only 2.5 to 3 lakh students alone are getting employment out of 50 lakh students graduating across the country in a year which calls for retrospection among the students to find out the skills they lack and acquire the relevant skills to establish a winning streak in their life.
The Orientation for the students was given by the College Director General Dr.M.Settu. He highlighted that the medium of instruction has a little role to play in terms of developing one’s employability skills. There are number of Personalities across the globe who have excelled in their life studying in their mother tongue. However what is required is to master English language skills which incidentally has become a global language. He has proudly informed that audience that STC always strives hard in making students extraordinary individuals with the available resources. He also read out the 10 golden commandment for the students of STC for them to come out with flying colours after their graduation.
The Vice Chairman of the College Lion.M.A.Vijayamoghan has felicitated the function and in his speech he highlighted that STC has given Scholarships to the needy students to the tune of Rs.1.25 Crore in this year 2016-17 which is the highest in the history of STC. He also highlighted grooming culture at STC wherein students are given Placement training right from first year by roping in services from one of India’s leading training provider, Talentsprint Hyderabad. Pollachi is surrounded by villages and mostly students are drawn from rural and poor background. To enhance their English communication, there is an exclusive Wordsworth English Lab with hi-fi Audio and Visual aids.
Later, Alumni of STC, Mr.G.Unni Krishnan. B.Com CA (Batch of 2012) and Nr.S.Balaji Sivanesan M.Sc. SS Batch of 2012 ) shared their experience and the transformation they have got because of STC ‘s student centric policies.
The College Principal Dr.V.Venkateswaran has proposed the Vote of Thanks. In his speech, he thanked the Chief guest Mr.A.James Stephen for having inspired the students with his thought provoking speech. He also advised the newly joined students to follow the footsteps of their seniors who brought laurels to their Parents as well as to the Institution. He called upon the students to devote themselves in their studies and he assured that STC always be a driving force in scripting their Career Success stories
